Following sell-outs for its most recent concerts,Victoria Chorale will perform Rossini’s delightful Petite Messe Solennelle on 14 September. Written in France in the composer’s final years, the work was first performed in March 1864 with just 12 singers at an intimate soiree. Within the traditional Mass structure, Rossini’s operatic genius shines through the work, with four soloists sharing beautiful melodies with the choristers. Victoria Chorale’s renowned Music Director, Mario Dobernig, will conduct this performance, accompanied by two pianists and a harmonium/accordion; the composer’s original scoring. Joining Victoria Chorale will be soloists Jacqueline Porter; Soprano, Sally-Anne Russell; Mezzo-Soprano, Jiacheng Ding; Tenor and Pelham Andrews; Bass.
Petite Messe Solennelle is neither “Petite” nor “Solennelle”. Lasting about 90 minutes it is one of the longest Masses in the repertoire. It is more operatic than solemn and includes challenging solo passages and 2 bright and lengthy 2 fugues for the choir. Some of its rhythms are almost jazzy!
The Mass has been performed regularly around the world for more than 150 years. Unlike any other choral work, it has a special place in the repertoire.
Date: Saturday 14 September, 5 pm,
