Conductor, Melbourne Chamber Choir 2026
Wanting to employ an accomplished choral conductor for an established Chamber Choir with a reputation for adventurous and high-quality performances. This auditioned choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings in North Melbourne. It performs an annual concert series and other events.
Repertoire ranges across all music eras, including new music.
The appointment is initially for 2026, to be renewed as agreed.
Position description
For 3-4 concerts, plus invited gigs, there is a rehearsal schedule of c. 30 Wednesday nights, rehearsing from 7.30 – 10 pm.
The conductor is invited to attend the monthly Administrative Committee meetings which overview both the Melbourne Chamber Choir and the Melbourne Women’s Choir.
The leadership position is for a conductor with:
. a positive spirit, able to motivate, inspire and provide joyful music making
. extensive knowledge of music and repertoire across music history
. ability to plan adventurous individual concerts and ‘series’ concert programs within agreed budgets
. developed conducting technique and rehearsal skill
, skill to audition choristers and select soloists and instrumentalists
. a deep knowledge of the voice, its development and knowledgeable warm ups
. a professional, respectful, collaborative relationship with singers, accompanists and instrumentalists
. ability to progress music across a rehearsal period
. reliability in commitment to rehearsals and events
. management skills for detail of rehearsals and events
. a collaborative relationship with choir leaders and the organisation’s administrators.

WHO IS UPBEAT ARTS?
Upbeat Arts provides group-based recovery programs tailored for long-term clients of Queensland Mental Health services, focusing on enhancing confidence, self-esteem, communication, and life skills. Our arts programs foster social connections, positive mental health, and overall well-being. Singing in an Upbeat Arts choir offers our members a supportive and enjoyable environment to connect with like-minded individuals.
We’re a non-government, non-clinical organisation committed to changing lives through the arts. We launched our first choir in Brisbane in 2014 and now have choirs in North Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast. We also hold two creative writing workshops each week.
YOUR ROLE
As an Upbeat Arts Conductor, your role will focus on the musical direction of the choirs, collaborating closely with an experienced accompanist. Upbeat Arts manages the operational aspects of the choir, including member and volunteer recruitment, communication, record-keeping, and all other logistical needs essential for sustaining a choir.
No two rehearsals will be the same, as you work with our dedicated choir members and volunteer buddies and teach them about their voice and singing within a choir setting.
Together and when it’s appropriate for a brand new choir, we pursue exciting performance opportunities, which you will help the choir prepare for.
DAYS AND TIMES- During the day, during the week – 10:15am to 12:15pm
- Weekly closely aligned to school terms – 45 per annum
- The choir will begin in April 2026
- Performances and events as agreed
- Venue, day etc is currently being finalised

A vacancy has arisen for the position of Musical Director of the Sunshine Coast Youth Choir. This choir is run under the banner of the Sunshine Coast Oriana Choir.
The Youth Choir has approximately 29 singing members, ranging in age from 8 to16. They rehearse in Buderim on Thursdays during school term time, from 4.30 – 6pm.
The Extension Group which consists of 11 of the members who are in high school, rehearse for the last 30 minutes, and they sing more advanced repertoire.

Upbeat Arts is launching a brand-new psychosocial recovery choir in Southport, Gold Coast. This is a free, Queensland Health–funded program that uses singing to support adults living with mental illness or experiencing disadvantage.
To bring it to life, we’re looking for volunteers to join the choir as a 'Choir Buddy'.
Choir buddies sit alongside our members, offer encouragement and a friendly smile, help us with setting up chairs etc and importantly share the joy of singing.Our new choir begins Monday 20 October, running each Monday, closely aligned with school terms.
Over the past 10 years in Brisbane, our choirs have helped over 1500 people find confidence, connection, and community. Many describe them as life changing.This is a unique and rewarding volunteer role, where you get to SING and be a part of the choir, yet you are giving back, yet also gaining benefits for yourself.

The Melbourne Singers, Victoria, a 93 year old SATB choir, are presently looking for an accompanist.
The group rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7.45 pm to 9.45 pm at the MLC Music Auditorium, Barkers Road, Kew.Music performed ranges from classical to popular.Performances are undertaken during the year with a final concert in November.Solo work would be available for the applicant as well as accompanying vocal and instrumental soloists.
It is a position that may appeal to students completing their University Music Degrees.Good sight reading would be an advantage.

Serenata Singers, a community SATB choir based at The Gap, Brisbane, is seeking to appoint a new Accompanist to commence at the start of 2026. This vacancy is due to our current Accompanist of 6 years needing to finish up for personal reasons at the end of 2025.
Established over 50 years ago, our non-auditioned choir currently has a membership of about 40 choristers. Rehearsals are held every Monday evening from 7 to 9pm. The varied choir repertoire is selected from music theatre, contemporary, folk, jazz, spirituals, classics, and country and western music.
A mixture of mid-week and weekend performances are generally held throughout the year (at least monthly) at retirement villages and other venues. The annual highlight is a fund-raising Gala Concert held later in the year in conjunction with the Ashgrove/The Gap Lions Club.Attachment:

The Southside Singers community choir (based in Salisbury, Brisbane) is seeking a new music director to lead their rehearsals and performances. The ideal candidate will be someone who can inspire and challenge singers of varying skill levels, fostering a supportive and engaging environment.
Conditions offered- 2 hours rehearsal per term night
- Fee of $200 - $250 (to be negotiated depending on experience etc) paid per term night rehearsal with payment of fees negotiated for events
- 1-2 possible performances per year, open to negotiation
- Work with the committee
- Cordless mic, amplifier and keyboard available
- Starting date late September / early October 2025
- The choir was formed in 2018.
- We meet weekly on Thursdays (6.45pm for 7pm to 9pm, with a 10-minute break) throughout 10-week terms (reflecting the Queensland school calendar)
- We sing predominantly SAB arrangements, although occasionally we will sing two part or four-part songs, splitting either the altos or the sopranos, depending on the arrangement.
- We typically have around 30 people at each rehearsal but, as with most community choirs, exactly who is in the room each week is often different.
- The group contains some great humans and rehearsals are normally littered with a lot of laughing and opportunity for exchange.
- A committee organises the choir, purchases recommended music, and works with the music director for the term’s program including performances.
- Leading weekly rehearsals and performances.
- Inspiring and challenging singers.
- Maintaining a supportive and engaging environment.
- Making musical decisions collaboratively with the committee, including repertoire, lyrics, sheet music, and accompaniment.
- Preparing the choir for public performances.
- A passion for bringing people together in song.
- Strong musical ability and preferably experience as a choir director.
- Good vocal skills and the ability to develop them in others.
- Excellent people skills and the ability to communicate effectively with individuals and groups.
- The ability to work in a team.
- A sense of humour.
