About Us

Melbourne Pride Chorus (MPC) is a vibrant, not-for-profit community choir with a 35-year legacy of musical excellence, inclusion, and pride. Our youth ensemble, shOUT Youth Chorus, brings together 20–30 singers aged 18–29 who rehearse and perform independently, while also collaborating in joint concerts with MPC.

About the Role

We’re seeking an inspiring and skilled Musical Director to lead shOUT Youth Chorus. This is an exciting opportunity to shape the artistic direction of a passionate group of young singers and help strengthen our reach in the broader community.
  • Rehearsals: Weekly on Wednesdays, 6:00–7:00pm (South Yarra)
     
  • Performances: 2–4 major concerts + various community events annually
     
  • Collaboration: Occasional joint rehearsals and concerts with MPC
     
  • Extras: Annual rehearsal camp; additional rehearsals ahead of performances 
shOUT is a non-auditioned choir with singers ranging from beginners to experienced sight-readers who come together for both music and meaningful connection.

Key Responsibilities

Rehearsals & Performance
  • Lead weekly rehearsals, vocal warm-ups, and performance preparation
     
  • Direct all performances, including major concerts and events
     
Artistic Development
  • Select and arrange repertoire that inspires and challenges
     
  • Nurture emerging artists and support Assistant Musical Directors
     
Program & People Management
  • Conduct solo auditions or vocal placements as needed
     
  • Collaborate on staging, choreography, and accompaniment
     
  • Attend Music Programming Committee meetings and MPC AGM
     
  • Represent shOUT in public and stakeholder settings
     

What We’re Looking For

Essential
* Strong choral conducting or music teaching experience 
* Formal music training (degree/diploma or equivalent) 
* Excellent musicianship and vocal understanding 
* Availability for weekly Wednesday evening rehearsals
 
Highly Regarded
* Piano/keyboard proficiency for rehearsal support 
* Choral arranging and vocal coaching experience 
* Familiarity with community or inclusive arts environments 
* Experience working with youth and diverse identities 
* Ability to lead face-to-face and virtual rehearsals
