Description: | ![]() A concert of Shakespeare-inspired song, from madrigal to jazz. “O Mistress Mine, where are you roaming?” From enchanted forests to smoky jazz clubs, Bel a cappella brings Shakespeare’s worlds to life through music in this dazzling program of choral works inspired by the Bard. Following their successful concert tour of Switzerland, Sydney’s adventurous chamber choir returns to local audiences with O Mistress Mine, a spirited celebration of Shakespeare’s enduring musical legacy. The program dances between time and style, from luminous English choral settings that echo Shakespeare’s world, to bold contemporary works and the playful swing of jazz. Under the direction of Monica Buckland, the program features Vaughan Williams’ lyrical Three Shakespeare Songs, the lush harmonies of Rebecca Clarke and Charles Wood, and striking contemporary works by Jaakko Mäntyjärvi, Iris Szeghy, Clive Lane and Matthew Harris. The concert culminates in jazz-inflected settings by George Shearing and John Rutter, accompanied by jazz piano and double bass. Whether you’re a theatre lover, literature buff or music devotee, O Mistress Mine offers a fresh way to experience the wit, romance and magic of Shakespeare - not on stage, but in song. |
